Here’s some interesting news posted on the Textile Arts Center’s blog:

The Handweaver’s Guild of America have issued a call for entries for their Convergence Conference in July of 2012 in Southern California.

HGA’s Convergence® 2012

Exhibit: July 18-21, 2012, Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, California

An international juried exhibit featuring high quality, contemporary works created in any material using any fiber technique.

Juror: Aaron Kramer; Exhibit Coordinator: Patty Savignac

International deadline: February 15, 2012. US deadline: February 22, 2012.

A coral reef in fiber

I love the post on the Kreinik Thread Blog about the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef exhibit that is currently on world tour. I stumbled on the exhibit by happy accident while visiting Washington, DC, on vacation in March. Kreinik’s photos are lovely, but I like these images by my friend Polly O’Grady even better. Take my word for it: The display is more varied and extensive than you can imagine from photos. Check it out if you can. See the Kreinik post.

TAFA’s on IndieGoGo

A note from Rachel Biel of The Textile and Fiber Art List alerts us that’s she’s still hard at work, trying to raise $5,000 for a new TAFA web site. She says,

We decided to go with IndieGoGo and just launched the campaign last night. Already, several members have contributed, moving us closer to our goal. We hope that you will join them and make our dream site a reality! Visit our page on IndieGoGo and show us some TAFA love! Kirsten Chursinoff’s “Low Tide”

Susan Eliott gives us a glimpse of the exquisite art of Kirsten Chursinoff. Her embroidery of sea life at low tide is fascinating, particularly when displayed next to the real-life images that were the inspiration. Kirsten has a show in Vancouver, BC, Canada, in June. The Needlework Show is open!

Here’s a heads-up from Cindy Ward of The Needlework Show:

The Needlework Show is currently open…

The General Viewing pages will close on Sunday at midnight, so if you’re wanting to browse the show and place orders with your local shop, be sure to “shop” the pages soon!

Once the wholesale show is closed (Tuesday, midnight), the General Viewing pages will re-open so that you can see products again, but any doorprizes, freebies, etc, will be gone at that point…

Remember, for General Viewing, you do NOT need a password.

Needleprint blog has issued a heads-up that Carrow House Museum and curator Philippa Sims will soon make available the chart for this antique Quaker sampler. The blog says,

You will be able to download the chart for free – I simply ask that you make a donation to Carrow House Museum – a donation PayPal button will take your donation direct to the museum.

While we wait for this project to go live, consider helping the Museum by purchasing one or both of the charts for two other designs based on the Carrow House collection. Each download is just GBP 7.00, and 100 percent of the proceeds go to the museum.

Enjoy “Connected by Threads” events

Some great news from the Alliance for American Quilts:

The nonprofit Alliance for American Quilts will host two fundraising events in Washington, DC on Thursday, March 4.

The “Connected by Threads” events will celebrate quilts, quiltmakers and quilt history through the lens of two speakers, Dr. Carolyn L. Mazloomi and Le Rowell, both board members of The Alliance for American Quilts (AAQ). The events will benefit the nonprofit AAQ, a national organization that documents, preserves and shares the rich history of quilts and quiltmakers. Both Mazloomi and Rowell will be sharing quilts from their own collections and studies. “Connected by Threads” is sponsored by Lisa Ellis of the Sacred Threads Exhibit and maker of Art Call, the on-line artist registration, jurying and exhibit administration system, www.ellisquilts.com, and the Rowell Family Charities.

Faith rewarded

Faith, known to many as the Plimoth Plantation jacket project, is complete at last and was revealed on The Embroiderer’s Story blog on December 10. I’ve followed this project since my first day as a CraftGossip editor. I know the level of effort and expertise applied to it — by 260 volunteers! — and so I expected a lot; but the jacket goes far beyond my imaginings.

Publicity materials from Plimoth Plantation note,

Since the winter of 2006, the Museum has worked closely with historic needlework scholar, Dr. Tricia Wilson Nguyen, who has coordinated the unmatched creation of a woman’s 17th-century linen waistcoat lavishly embroidered in silk and gold. This unique and significant jacket is based on surviving pieces from the first quarter of the 17th century in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London, England. Additionally, because of the intricate and specific detail of this jacket project, historic metal threads that have not been in production for centuries, have been brought back, not just for use in this project but also for the general public too.

“It is interesting to note that the Museum’s research into these jackets has yielded several interesting discoveries, helping to recapture lost technologies, which have now been shared with the next-generation-needlework community and beyond,” said Ellie Donovan, Plimoth Plantation Executive Director. “Rediscovering lost technologies and sharing them with the world is at the heart of what we do at Plimoth Plantation, and it is of the utmost importance to future innovation in all areas.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in the project for its unqualified success. And sincere thanks for the education and entertainment the project has provided to needleworkers worldwide.
