Here’s a great heads-up from Tricia of Thistle Threads:

The exhibit we have all been waiting for is finally open!…Cunning Needle – Four Centuries of Embroidery opened last Friday, Sept 2nd at Winterthur. The exhibition will be open until January 8th, 2012 – so get your plans together to see it. The exhibition uses the Plimoth Jacket as the central touchstone to explore makers, materials and techniques over four centuries of embroidery.

The Kreinik Thread Blog shared a brochure for the meeting of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America this September in Naples, Florida. I intended to take a quick glance and got caught up for at least a half-hour. Dozens of opportunities are scheduled for stitchers to learn from experts in every genre, from traditional goldwork to contemporary organza collage. A dream vacation, to be sure. A monumental work

Hannah of enbrouderie gives us a glimpse of traditional embroidery on a grand scale that embodies cultural and reverent expression. Her explanation, photos, and links to additional resources introduce the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia–a cube-shaped building that is the most sacred site in Islam. The Kaaba is draped each year with a new Kiswa, a black silk cover with goldwork calligraphy. Hannah says,

The hand [in the photo] belongs to Fareed, who has been sewing the gold and silver threads into the Kiswa for more than 30 years. Embroidering the Kiswa is extremely prestigious work, and is done entirely by men.
