I bought a sampler in Virginia, USA about 2 weeks ago. It is a Homespun sampler called A Wedding Band. How do I transfer the pattern onto the piece of linen? Sorry if this seems to be a very basic query.

If the linen is an even weave, meaning that all the threads are evenly woven and evenly spaced apart then you usually stitch two threads for each one on the pattern. For example when you begin the first half of your stitch, instead of counting one thread over you count two threads or holes over. If you are looking for linen look for one that states it is 36 or 28 count.
