Urban Threads logoSuppose you’re into embroidery, but you’re not into primitive designs, or retro designs, or puppies or birdies. You’re looking for designs that are a bit edgy. Funky. Modern. Go to Urban Threads right now and start downloading!

Urban Threads is the brainchild of Niamh (pronounced Nee-uv) — a detour on her road to a BFA that turned out to be a destination. “The more I learned,” she says, “the more I noticed that the design industry lacked a certain type of art fitting today’s savvy indie crafters. I wanted designs that fit a different kind of style. Since I couldn’t find them, I decided I’d just have to make them myself. So I set about creating, and Urban Threads was born.”

Designs range from robots to tattoo-style images to cute little peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches. They’re available in machine-embroidery formats as well as hand-embroidery line art, and the price for each downloadable file is about US $3.00 to US $5.00. Furthermore, Urban Threads grants you a license to embroider the designs on as many items as you wish and to offer those items for sale. (They just ask you not to share the design files themselves. Very reasonable.)

Rock on, Urban Threads!

I’m surprised she couldn’t find any designs that fit indie crafters. Jenny Hart / Sublime Stitching has been hashing out tattoo themes etc. for almost 10 years now. I guess the more the merrier tho!

Hi, Lee! Thanks for your comment. Sublime Stitching is, indeed, as cool as it is popular. My understanding, though, is that SS’s designs are for personal use only unless you work out a licensing agreement with the company. Urban Threads is an “angel company.” That is, you can use the design as many times as you wish at any size you wish on items for sale.
