Sewing Pincushions are also called Emery Bag as they contain Emery powder and oxide iron that removes rust from pins and needles. Emery pinch cushions can be bought here.
Pincushions, also known as pin pillows, were popular in Europe throughout the Middle Ages. The tomato pin cushion initially appeared in print in the 15th century. Metal pins were once preserved in a variety of protective cases made of bone, ivory, or silver due to their scarcity and high cost. Because of the legend about the fruit, which meant wealth and repelled evil spirits, the characteristic tomato form arose.
However, as tomatoes became scarce, cloth versions were created. The red tomato is the most well-known pin cushion today. The strawberry tassel on the pin cushion contains emery and is used to clean and sharpen needles and pins.
