Even whether the threads are imitation gold embroidery thread, silver, or copper, the phrase “goldwork” is used. The metal wires used to construct the threads were never fully gold; they were usually gold-coated silver or cheaper metals, and even then, the “gold” sometimes included just a very small percentage of genuine gold.
Japanese thread embroidery originated in China with gold, silver, and copper metals. Gold and silver yarns were created by pressing gold and silver stock into exceedingly thin leaf, which was then cut into very small strips and twisted into yarn.
