Christi Johnson’s Mystical Stitches (June 2021) is a beautiful embroidery book with over 100 unique patterns influenced by a vibrant folk-art aesthetic and imbued with metaphysical meaning. Readers may mix and sew each symbol to create unique embroidered items of personal meaning using the how-to instructions. Mystical Stitches features patterns inspired by botanicals, animals, numbers, the cosmos, earth elements, and mythological icons for novice and experienced crafters to combine into talismans with personal meaning. Author Christi Johnson brings her expertise in fashion design and teaching to the book.
Johnson’s style is vibrant and unintimidating and provides a framework for bringing spiritual elements into physical form.
In addition to basic techniques, an overview of material options, and an illustrated encyclopedia of stitches, the extensive treasury of symbols is lavishly photographed by Brad Ogbonna in hand-stitched, full-color spreads that will inspire readers to create personalized designs to stitch on clothes, hang on the wall, place on an altar, carry with them, or display in a place of prominence.

I dream of this book. It would be very interesting because all is symbol and all symbols can be embroidered and put in a more complexe combination full of sense……

I am a beginner am inspired by the mystical designs. They speak to me more than the usual patterns I’ve come across. I would like to make embroidered cards for friends. Thank you for this opportunity!

I would love to win this book as my 13 yo son has asked me to show him how to stitch as a way to destress as he has recently started to have anxiety. All my patterns are “too girly”. The style of the images shown would be right up his alley as he is a fan of wizards and fantasy. I think this would capture his interest.

Just seeing the cover has me completely captivated! Yes, the designs look amazing, but I’m also deeply interested in reading the author’s discussions of the practice itself as a spiritual act and imbuing her work with intention. Choose me!
Leala Skwara Baeza says
Ooh, this book looks very interesting and unique! I’ve seen a lot of religious embroidery patterns, but not much in the way of mystical symbols. Being of a non-Christian faith makes it hard to find meaningful patterns. I would absolutely love to create some of these pieces, both for my own use and for friends.
Pat Dalpe says
