The phrase Home Sweet Home has a very interesting origin, it comes from the song “Home, Sweet Home” which was inspired by an opera called Clari, or The Maid of Milan. Sir Henry Bishop created the music and John Howard Payne wrote the lyrics (1786-1855). ‘Mid pleasures and palaces we may visit, but there’s no place like home, no matter how lowly!’ Home,Sweet Home” was the single most popular song of the entire 19th century, both in the United States and in England

Throughout the nineteenth century, “Home, Sweet Home” was the most popular song in both the United States and England. German wool and cross stitch landed on American shores after the American Civil War, when cross stitch took off. Following the war, many samplers focused on God, America, and home.

You’ll hear statements like “God bless this house” at this point. When more men returned from the front, they carried back the melodies they had sang, and ‘Home! Sweet Home!’ became a common phrase at the period. Indeed, The Wizard of Oz’s famous “there’s no place like home” phrase is drawn on this.Free patterns
