My sincere thanks to each of you who took the time to comment on my post, How subversive are you? I’ve learned several things from this exercise:
- Glenda mentioned that it would be helpful if I labeled links as NSFW when they lead to images that may offend some readers, and many other commenters agreed. I’ll implement this suggestion immediately.
- I appreciate that several of you offered vocal support for freedom of expression with comments such as Kirsten’s, “This is your blog.” I agree that we should not accept limits to the power that the Internet gives individuals to manifest their unique viewpoints. On the other hand, Needlework News is not my personal blog. It is one face of the CraftGossip blog network, which is all about our readers. Your interests will always be of paramount importance to me.
- The consensus seems to be that the readers of this blog thrive on diversity—of technique, of culture or tradition, and of subject matter. Yea! That’s just what I thought. I’m so happy to have that belief confirmed.
- Many of you had thoughts similar to Ruth’s, “If it’s just too out there for me I just don’t bother with it.” This suggests the kind of tolerance I embrace. I’ll continue to work on the assumption that if, for example, you are non-Christian, you’ll just skip over posts about free patterns that focus on Christian holidays; that if you’re most interested in cross-stitch, you’ll just ignore posts about tatting; and that if your interests lie with traditional themes, you’ll pass by links with NSFW labels.
If you’ve read this far, here’s a little thank-you heads-up for you. On September 2, I’ll celebrate one of those birthdays that end in zero, so during the month of August I’ll be posting a giveaway nearly every day. What’s in store? Some awesome books, lots and lots of needlework kits, and perhaps a few finished pieces from my personal inventory. Because that’s how much I love you!
Denise

I think your approach is great…give us a little of everything and we can pick what we like and skip what we don’t. I look forward to your posts!

As stated above, I thrive on diversity! I do not think that I would have tried so many different crafts without the inspiration of your blog. I appreciate how eclectic your post are. Prior to being a reader I would not have considered quilting, or subversive cross-stitch, and “tatting” would be something someone does at the Tattoo studio.
Hooah.

I just had a birthday that ended in a zero. Happy early birthday and remember – it beats the heck out of the alternative!
