All you need to survive

July 16, 2011 by Denise Felton 6 Comments

I wish I could transplant Catherine McEver’s brain into my head. Look at what she’s come up with now: a survival doll. I’m simultaneously laughing and considering the possibilities. She says,

Whether earthquake, tornado, terrorist attack, the rapture, or an alien invasion from outer space, you have only to grab your survival doll and run. Concealed within this innocent-looking, seemingly worthless doll is everything you will need to survive just about anything that could possibly happen. Other survivors you encounter may attack and try to steal your food, money and other supplies, but it’s unlikely they will bother with a doll.

The doll is stuffed with a cup of white rice (one arm), a cup of brown rice (other arm), dried lentils (one leg), dried peas (other leg), a plastic bottle filled with fishing supplies (head), a cache of silver dimes (in a heart appliqued to the body), and other survival gear such as sewing and first-aid supplies (body). The two-layer petticoat (concealed beneath the skirt) is covered with drawings that constitute a survival manual–from instructions for building a raft to how to purify water.

This is yet another in Catherine’s series of  “Stuff You Can’t Have”–prototypes she develops brilliantly but doesn’t market. But nobody’s keeping you from designing your own survival doll. See the details on Catherine’s blog post.

This is what the family should have carried in “The Road” story.
