Bargello needlepoint, which originated in sixteenth-century Italy, uses a basic stitch that is repeated repeatedly to make a distinctive geometric design in brilliant colors. Our moms and grandparents enjoyed it in the 1960s and 1970s, and it is currently having a comeback among makers.
The method lends itself to dramatic, wave-like motifs in vibrant, graded colours, and it’s frequently used to make eye-catching pillows, bags, belts, and handbags.
This new collection updates Bargello designs with 40 stitch patterns ranging from beginner to intermediate. Laura and Lynsey Angell, sisters, provide a brief history of the technique, as well as suggestions on equipment and supplies and a stitch instruction. A plethora of upgraded designs follow.
