Book review: Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection

October 31, 2010 by Denise Felton 12 Comments

Aimee Ray’s Doodle-Stitching liberated its readers. Although it was subtitled Fresh & Fun Embroidery for Beginners, even craggy veterans appreciated her advice to “Just thread your needle and start stitching.” With her permission and gentle push, we found ourselves doodling our own original designs and discovering new avenues for our creativity.

Now Lark Crafts has released a follow-up volume: Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection. And it’s even better than the first book. In the introduction, Aimee says,

You’ll find an expanded and updated version of all the embroidery basics of the first book, plus a collection of more than 400 embroidery motifs organized into more than a dozen categories.

Now even stitchers who never found the confidence to doodle can participate in the design process. Aimee provides her characteristically charming line art on a CD attached to the book cover. You can use the files to size and combine the images to get the perfect custom art for your project. The threads, colors, and stitches you use are still up to you. And with the new set of 17 projects, you’ll have plenty of options for putting your stitchery to practical use.

The CD alone is worth far more than the US$ 14.95 cover price of the book. It’s a must-have for your stitching library. ISBN 978-1-60059-581-3.

Ed. note: Lark Crafts requested a review and provided copies of the book for review and giveaway. They did not, however, tell me what to say. I really like the book so much that, because my review copy was severely damaged in transit, I’m buying a new copy for my personal bookshelf. Must-have. Mean it.

Love Aimee Ray’s first book – this one will definitely end up in my collection – such unique yet simple patterns – I look at everything and think about the lines for stitching – yay!

I think I am in love!! I have wanted to try embroidery for sooo long but have been intimidated by all the intricate stitch work! The most I have done was a 8×10 mouse outline only in French Knots – in 6th grade! These are simply adorable!!! I would love to win this book but it is going on my wish list just in case!!

Since I cannot seem to register above for the book giveaway – it says to register through the 14th, but won’t let you register – I am going to give it a shot here. What can it hurt?
