Book review: Felting for Baby

November 14, 2009 by Denise Felton 14 Comments

feltTrumpeter Books has my sincere gratitude for publishing its Make Good : Crafts + Life series, Japanese craft books produced in English for the first time. As the publisher says, “The books in this new series offer unique projects, beautiful photographs, and clear step-by-step diagrams that make it easy to create a life of natural beauty through crafts.”

Take Felting for Baby by Saori Yamazaki, for example. Gentle, natural colors; simple, classic shapes and designs; soft natural fibers. Of course you want to create such comfort and beauty for a baby you love. The felting instructions are clear and accurate, though not easy. (Take it from me, wet felting takes a lot of upper-body strength.) But the resulting projects are worth the effort. And why would needleworkers care about a book on felting? Because the sweet baby booties, vests, and other items make ideal surfaces for embroidery. The stitches settle down into the felt and become one with the softness.

Check out the book and see if you agree. It retails for US $21.95, but it’s on sale now at Amazon.com for $14.93! No affiliation; just smart shopping. ISBN 978-1-59030-716-8.

I would love to have the book about felted items for babies to make things for my little grandaughter and also for charity knitting that I do. The little shoes on the cover are just adorable.

Learning to be at one with fiber felting items for wee babies sounds irresistible, Felting for Baby by Saori Yamazaki will be high on this grandma’s list of to do! Embellishing the charming felted baby items with embroidery on the woolen fibers would make the needles sing in joy! Thanks, Nikki
