Ray Slater‘s Cloth Dolls for Textile Artists is a terrific guide, whether you’re thinking of attempting your first doll or your an experienced doll artist. The book’s clear instructions, useful illustrations, and abundant creative ideas will get your doll mojo perking, for sure.
Slater explains the construction of three basic types of dolls: stump dolls, wired dolls, and stuffed cloth dolls. From these three techniques, you can create nearly any doll you can imagine. He lists basic tools for dollmaking and provides patterns. But more exciting to me are Slater’s descriptions and examples of embellishing techniques. He shows dozens of ideas for creating original background fabrics and adding fascinating, rich details to the dolls’ bodies and clothing. Even if you’re not a dollmaker, you’ll enjoy his ideas for painting, machine embroidery, and hand stitching.
