Book review: Needlepoint Trade Secrets

August 27, 2011 by Denise Felton 1 Comment

Wouldn’t it be nice to have an expert stitcher on hand all the time to help you solve problems and share tidbits of wisdom to make your stitchy life easier? You can have needlepoint expert Janet M. Perry at your elbow with exactly this kind of advice, and you don’t have to provide her room and board! Janet has put together Needlepoint Trade Secrets, a collection of tips and advice accumulated through her more than 35 years’ experience in working with needlepoint. She also tosses in some excellent ideas from readers of her well-known blog, Nuts About Needlepoint. Janet says, “The ideas in this book will help any stitcher, new or experienced, stitch easier and better, with more beautiful results.” Topics include materials, threads, canvas, stitches, traveling with needlepoint, project ideas, and more. Don’t just add this book to your bookshelf; keep it in your stitching basket!

The book is published by Napa Needlepoint, Janet’s logo. ISBN 978-1-4196-6533-2. You can find it at your local needlework shop. Or you can order it from Amazon.com for US$17.95 in softcover or US$3.99 for the Kindle edition. Or you could win a copy from CraftGossip! Go to our giveaway post.

Ed. note: Janet M. Perry provided a copy of this book for the review and giveaway. She didn’t tell me what to say about it. The opinion expressed here is all mine.

I love the idea of this book. Thirty one years ago I started my very first needlepoint project. It was of our home with my three kids in the garden and my face looking on with our names, the place and the date. A bit like a canvas sampler with a host of different stitches to give texture. I completed a quarter of it and no more until two months ago when I took it up again and it’s nearly done! I have completed transfer canvas work in the past but a book like Janet Perry’s would be invaluable as I intend to go on creating my own needlepoint designs and need some help. They are so lovely to work on and make your soul happy and contented.
