Sugar skull art has always fascinated me. So many of the designs are very intricate and they feature bold and bright colors. That beautiful artwork can be found in this small hand embroidery project from Casa Artelexia. Using felt in practically every color of the rainbow, a little bit of bling, and some simple hand embroidery stitches, the designer creates these beautiful little fabric trinkets.
Sugar skulls originated in Mexico in the 18th century. They were (and still are) a way to honor a deceased loved one during the Day of the Dead holiday which takes place on the first two days in November.
These little felt ones are a fun way to make your very own sugar skulls. To make them, you will need felt, embroidery floss, a needle, fiber fill, glue, and sequins (if desired).
With plenty of photos, this detailed tutorial shows you how to make your sugar skull from start to finish. It even includes instructions for the blanket stitching around the edges. You can purchase a kit from them to get you started, or you can make it yourself.
So gather up your brightly colored felt, some pretty embroidery floss, and stitch one up for yourself.
