Embroidery: Cool tool

June 16, 2008 by Denise Felton 2 Comments

floss

Diane at Puffin & Company gave us a heads-up about a new, cool product: the Puffin Craft Strand Separator.

Many years ago, someone I don’t even remember taught me the peel-and-squoosh method of separating strands of embroidery floss or wool. Sometimes it works beautifully. Sometimes I end up with a tangled mess. Sometimes I resort to holding one end of the floss between my teeth while I untwist with both hands. Sound familiar?

Puffin & Company has come up with an elegantly simple solution: Snap their little alligator clip and weight onto one end of the floss, hold the other end of the floss in one hand, grab the strands you want to separate in the other hand, and pull. The floss neatly untwists with no tangles (or swearing). See the video.

The basic tool comes ornamented in a variety of styles to match your taste or that of a needleworker in your life. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on one. If you get one first, please let me know what you think of it.
