How to Create Otomi Embroidery

January 11, 2021 by Claudia Porter 1 Comment

I was fascinated to see this tutorial about Otomi Embroidery from Sarita Creative.  I was not familiar with it, but when I saw this, I immediately recognized the technique from photos I had seen of embroidered objects from Mexico.

Otomi embroidery is a traditional type of needlework done by the Otomi people of Mexico.  Many of the designs are flowers and animals, and they are characteristically bright and colorful.

This handy tutorial shows you how to create your own unique designs in this style.  According to the author, Otomi embroidery looks like the satin stitch, but it’s actually a modified herringbone type of stitch.  In the article, you will find step by step photos of the entire process to help you out.

To create your own design you will need basic embroidery supplies like a hoop, needle, fabric, embroidery thread, and a marking tool.  That’s it, nothing special is needed and you are soon on your way to designing a unique piece of art.

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to grab all of my brightly colored embroidery thread and make a bouquet of flowers.
