Japanese Temari

September 4, 2007 by Joanne 2 Comments

Hello,

I am excited to get started as the CraftGossip Needlework editor.  I looked up the definition of needlework and this is what I found;

Noun; 1. a creation created or assembled by needle and thread, 2. work (such as sewing or embroidery) that is done with a needle.

Temari balls are beautiful Japanese embroidered thread wrapped balls, in ancient Japan they were crafted to give to children to play with, but today they are given as a token of good luck.

So for my first post to the needlework blog, I would like to share with you a book that has been newly released, that I find truly wonderful.  The book, titled Japanese Temari, A Colorful Spin on An Ancient Craft written by Barbara B. Seuss (ISBN 1933308125) is a softcover book filled with 144 pages of easy to follow instructions written for the beginner, gorgeous pictures of the Temari balls, poetry and cultural stories.

If you would like to learn more about Japanese Temari, there is a great website that goes into further detail here.
