Melanie Testa — artist, author, and teacher — also is a breast cancer survivor. She is one of a growing number of women who choose against reconstructive surgery or prosthetics. She says,
We want to turn the repressive body image pressures off and create a new sexy, strong and beautiful but we are flat or half flat!…I seek a physical representation of the women that you know, who made the decision not to reconstruct their bodies after breast cancer by way of making breast pockets.
Her Breast Pocket Project seeks to gather 1000 handmade breast-pocket soft sculptures in three weeks. If she meets this goal, an ABC News reporter has committed to publicizing her cause. Want to join in? See Melanie’s blog post for details. Deadline: October 22, 2012.
Many thanks to Gerrie of Gericon Designs for pointing out this project.
