New multi-language stitch glossary — FREE!

December 14, 2009 by Denise Felton Leave a Comment

glossaryJust look what Avo Meri has done now! She has put together an illustrated stitch glossary in Portuguese, English, Italian, French, and German. This new tool is especially helpful to me as I struggle (being fluent only in English) to maintain an international needlework blog. Meri says,

Last September I began joining all the dispersed papers with embroidery stitch names I had, mostly in Portuguese or English. Then I thought it would be great to do a glossary, but with a stitch picture. There my troubles began fitting pictures in the right places. After many do’s and undo’s in Word, Excel and Word again I got a solution. I think! Then again I began thinking only Portuguese and English would be much restrictive, since here in Portugal we have many Italian and French embroidery magazines. And then why not German? Here I stopped!

The search of Portuguese names was a “headache”. A stitch has a different name at different places. A name refers to more than one stitch. I chose to write the different names I found for a stitch and added a * to the name we can find referring to another stitch. And for some stitches I still have some doubts (in Portuguese)! But it didn’t happened only to me! Of course I’ve asked for virtual helps! Otherwise this work couldn’t be possible with a minimum of reliability. To whom? To Mary Corbet, of course! To Luzine Happel, so referred about Schwalm Whitework, gave a precious and prompt help and made a meticulous review of German. To Gianna e Fulvia. To Elena. To you all, my big THANK YOU!

The glossary is a free download. Yes, that’s right. Meri is sharing the product of her hard work (and the supporting efforts of her collaborators) with all of us! Get the free download from Meri’s blog.
