Interweave, the publisher that brings you Quilting Arts magazine, has brought editor Pokey Bolton and quilt-art innovations to the television screen. Season 2 (series 200) of Quilting Arts TV is now running in many areas. But suppose it’s not available in your region. Or suppose that, where you live, it airs at 3:00 a.m. and you don’t have a recorder. (That’s my situation.) Just get the whole series on DVD, and watch it when you want and as often as you want.
I’ve watched some episodes over and over, gleaning new information each time. For example, Jamie Fingle shows how she uses zippers to configure her quilts, simplifying their construction while adding drama to the composition. Tina Givens demonstrates velvet applique, applying bold silhouettes to her colorful, whimsical fabrics. Linda and Laura Kemshall, a mother-and-daughter design team from the UK, appear in several episodes to show various innovative techniques they apply to their quilts, including the use of text and original graphics. And Wen Redmond shows my very favorite technique of all, “holographic imagery.” By layering two prints of the same photo – one transferred to embellished fabric and one printed on silk organza – she achieves an amazing three-dimensional effect.
The series focuses on art quilting and emerging techniques, with a how-to emphasis that is bound to appeal to the whole range of quiltdom, from edgy, new-media artists to strict traditionalists. You can order the four-DVD set from a number of online vendors. It’s also available directly from Interweave for US $39.99.
