What is Sashiko?
So what’s all the hype about this ‘Sashiko’?
Well, Sashiko (say it sash-ee-ko) literally translates from Japanese as ‘little stabs’ or ‘little piercing’. It is a centuries-old Japanese art/craft that was once used to repair clothing. It continued on to become a stand-alone craft that is actually quite beautiful.
It involves making stitches along fabric in patterns, as the photo shows below.
Sashiko is the perfect way to brush up on your embroidery skills – plus, it is a very relaxing and unique craft.
How Do I Get Started?
There are plenty of local workshops – just type ‘Sashiko Workshop’ into your search bar.
Although most of these workshops would provide materials for you, you can purchase Sashiko kits at your local craft store. Essentially, you can just grab some white thread, any needle, a thimble, and something to sew and you’re ready for launch.

How Do I Actually, Well, DO it?
There are really no rules. Just sew! It doesn’t have to be in a pretty pattern.
