You may or may not know that, although CraftGossip is based in Australia, I live in the state of Arkansas in the USA. That is, I live about 30 miles from the town of Beebe, where about 5,000 blackbirds dropped from the sky — dead — on New Year’s Eve. Even after autopsy, the cause of this phenomenon is not clear. One theory is that the birds were startled by fireworks and, disoriented, flew into buildings and suffered blunt-force trauma. (Really? Then why don’t we have similar incidents every July 4?) The author of needleart blog Completely Cauchy has memorialized this mystery in embroidery. Yes! I’d love to see a whole gallery show of stitched interpretations of the news! See more on the blog post.
Many thanks to Carrie of Peace, Love, and Stitchiness for pointing out this find.

I’m with you. If it was fireworks, why doesn’t it happen every year. NBC nightly news just did a report on the same thing happening in Sweden in the last few days. Very strange indeed.

Where at in Arkansas do you live? I live in Hot Springs. I am like you, if fireworks caused this then why doesn’t it happen on the 4th. And really, just how many fireworks went off that night? You know there are lots more fireworks going on on the 4th than for New Year’s eve. This is probably something we will never really know for sure.

Hi, Thelma! I’m in Maumelle. We keep hearing more and more about unexplained mass deaths of animals. I really DON’T want to see them all memorialized in embroidery. I want them to STOP! 🙂
