Softies a boy will love

August 20, 2012 by Denise Felton 3 Comments

Helen of Bustle & Sew gave us the heads-up about her precious new pattern for Brave Aviator Mice. Adorable! Hers are made from vintage wool scraps. I think they’d be awesome made from felt, too. You can purchase the pattern from the Bustle & Sew online shop.

I’ve seen this sort of editor commentary on a few kid-related posts recently, and I’m saddened by it. Yes, in general boys may tend to show a preference for planes/cars/robots and girls for fairies/flowers/sparkles, but as adults we should know better than to reinforce gender stereotypes. Girls play with planes, cars and robots too, given the opportunity!

(I say this as a woman working on both an electrical engineering degree and a helicopter pilot’s license. I’m in a roughly 7% minority in one and a 3% minority in the other. This kind of “this is for BOYS!” attitude isn’t going to help those appalling numbers.)

Gorgeous! My BOYS will love these. Whilst I agree that my girl would enjoy them too, there are plenty of things out there that are designed specifically with girls in mind. It is refreshing to see craft projects that are suitable for boys as well. There needs to be more of these types of toys and patterns out there.

I’m sorry you were offended by my headline, Cassie. I agree that my daughters would have enjoyed these mice as much as my son would have.
