The motto of the Ships Project is “Supporting America’s Troops Deployed in the War on Terror One Stitch at a Time!” The project finds out what items are most needed by the troops. Individuals make hats, slippers, socks, cool ties, and other items and send them to the project. (Due to security concerns, the mailing address is available only to those who join the project’s Yahoo group.) The project uses its resources and connections to distribute the items to those who need them most. To get behind this project with your crafts or donations, see the site.
Many thanks to Patty of Pip Stitch for sharing the link to this outstanding organization.

A friend of mine is a charity knitter and knits both for this project and for orphans in Afghanistan (she keeps both sides warm!). She wrote an article on both organizations for Fiber Focus: http://fiberfocus.blogspot.com/2008/05/guest-artist-diane-gerlach-charity.html
Check it out! Lots of great photos.
