Stitchcraft: An Embroidery Book of Simple Stitches and Peculiar Patterns

September 12, 2025 by Shellie Wilson Leave a Comment

I stumbled upon Stitch craft at my local library, and let me tell you, I couldn’t put it down. This is not your average embroidery book—it’s a journey into a world of magic, mystery, and creativity that brings embroidery to life in the most enchanting way. Gayla Partridge, with her eye for the unusual, takes a familiar craft and adds a wonderfully witchy twist.

What I love about this book is how it combines the ancient art of embroidery with quirky, esoteric designs. From intricate floral skulls to palmistry hands, and even snakes and botanical hearts, Partridge’s designs are anything but ordinary. Her attention to detail is exceptional, and each project has its own story to tell. What makes this book stand out is that it’s not just for expert crafters—beginners will find themselves instantly at home, thanks to the clear, step-by-step instructions and the use of just nine basic stitches.

The photography is absolutely stunning—each piece is photographed in such a way that you can almost feel the texture of the thread and fabric. It’s inspiring to see how something as simple as a basic stitch can create such magical designs. There are 30 beautiful patterns to try out, and while some of them look intricate, Partridge’s easy-to-follow instructions make it feel achievable even for beginners like me.

What really hooked me is the way Partridge shares the stories behind each piece. Whether it’s inspired by vintage anatomical artwork or occult symbolism, there’s a richness and depth to her creations that give each design a unique charm.

For anyone who’s ever been curious about adding a little mystery and magic to their stitching, this book is a must. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re a seasoned pro looking for something new to try, Stitchcraft will captivate you from the very first stitch. I couldn’t help but be inspired to grab my needle and thread and start creating my own little enchanted pieces!
