This seems to be a good idea, but at some point you will have to pass the needle through the top layer as you get to the end. Using an invisible thread would seem to be the logical answer, that way when you did have to sew through the top layer it would not show.
I don’t think you’d have to pass the needle through the top layer, Jo. I think all stitching can be secured on the back of the mat with tape. Invisible thread sounds like a good idea anyway, though!
