Redwork is a type of American embroidery, sometimes known as art needlework, that emerged in the nineteenth century and was especially popular between 1855 and 1925. Red thread, in the form of Turkey red embroidery floss, is historically used since red dyes were the first commercially accessible colorfast dyes.
In the late 1870s, redwork became fashionable. It got its name from the embroidery thread Turkey Red. For decades, the production method for “Turkey Red” was sophisticated and well-guarded. The whole “recipe” for the original dye is still unknown. Redwork was quite popular among ordinary people since the cotton thread was not only colorfast, but also less expensive than the silk threads that were regularly used at the period.
