Redwork is a form of American embroidery, sometimes known as art needlework, that first appeared in the nineteenth century and was most popular between 1855 and 1925. Since red dyes were the first commercially available colorfast dyes, red thread, in the form of Turkey red embroidery floss, has been used historically.
Redwork became popular in the late 1870s. It was named after the embroidery thread Turkey Red. For decades, the “Turkey Red” manufacturing technique was complex and well guarded. The original dye’s whole “recipe” is still unknown. Redwork was popular among ordinary people since the cotton thread was not only colorfast, but also less costly than the silk threads commonly used at the time.
