The arrival of this book in my house provoked squealing, jumping, and uninhibited happy dancing. Not from me; from my manga- and anime-loving daughter! Don’t get me wrong: This colorful book full of lively needlework designs made my heart sing. But if Manga Cross-Stitch by Helen McCarthy is intended to incite the young to get acquainted with needle and floss, then I think my daughter’s reaction proves the author is right on target.
Publisher Andrews McMeel Universal says,
The 128-page book and accompanying CD provide over a hundred original, full-color and monochrome manga designs, along with “charts” to print out and stitch. Also included:
- Designs ranging from quick-stitch characters to complex action scenes
- Tips and techniques for cross-stitch beginners, experts and everyone in-between
- Software that allows each manga design to be personalized to make a perfect gift for a manga fan
- Compatible with both Windows and Mac

Would love to get one of these for my great niece Victoria. She is very into the Manga and is getting some other cross stitch materials for Christmas since she has shown an interest in learning that. Thanks for the great review. Keep up your good work!
Take care,

Thanks for a great review and a fun blog! I’m so glad you and your daughter like the book. I’m hoping to make another book to take the concept further, but in case it doesn’t get off the ground at the publisher’s, I’d be interested in reader feedback on how to take the Manga Cross-Stitch concept forward. Is the MCS Facebook page already more than enough? Would you like to see a webpage with downloadable designs, hints and tips? What about an e-book? All input will be gratefully received and valued, either on my website email address – helensweb@ helenmccarthy.org – or on the Facebook page.
