Are you a regular at your local yarn shop? I am too. You won’t find a better place on earth for all of the sights, sounds, and feels of beautiful yarn. The best part about heading to the shop is that you get to catch up on all of the latest with knitting and crochet. They are sure to have something you have never seen or tried before, from a sweater stone to remove pilling from your projects to the very latest in knitting needles. Oh sure, you can purchase all of these things online if you wanted to, after all, nobody is making you head out to the shop unless you absolutely want to, but there is one thing that your local yarn shop has that your internet favorite does not: a knitting club. That’s right, every local yarn shop has one. There amongst the skeins, hooks, and needles is a wealth of information just waiting for you to begin working on your latest project and join in the fun. Here are all the reasons why you’ll want to hit the stitch club.
Company
By now, you’ve exhausted your family and friends who don’t indulge in the craft. It seems crazy to think that they are fascinated by your talk of perfect gauge swatches and stitch counts, but they just are not interested. I’m sorry to be the one to break the news to you. If you go and find yourself a stitching club, for once you are going to be surrounded by people who not only know what you’re talking about but also care. It will be a welcome change, I assure you.
Sympathy
Remember that time you forgot to measure before choosing a size for your mitts or your vest, and all of that time and yarn was wasted? I’m sure you’ll never forget the feeling. The beauty of being with your fellow stitchers is that they have made similar mistakes and can sympathize with your aggravation. There are certain problems like blocking, weaving in ends, and the always dreadful gauge swatch that makes all of us give up a collective groan. Nobody who isn’t into the craft could even begin to understand. Save that talk for your stitching sisters (and brothers).
New skills
If you have been longing to try something new, now is your chance. The beauty of the stitch club isn’t just that you are surrounded by people who know the craft, they may even know it better than you currently do. Are you a beginning knitter? Here is a wonderful place to begin working on a project and getting tips on how to improve your tension, tidy up your technique, and begin mastering your craft. Those of us who are part of the club like nothing better than knowing that we are helping someone else to “level up” in their art. Trust me, you won’t be at a loss for teachers at a stitching club. Incorporate their techniques into your everyday crafting, and you’ll be appreciating your knitting or crochet on a level you haven’t yet experienced.
Don’t bore your friends and family to death by speaking to them in the foreign language of the needle artists. Head on down to the local yarn shop to enter a land where everyone knows your struggle and welcomes you as a member of the club. Enjoy the gossip, the knowledge and the camaraderie of the stitching club!
