Queen Elizabeth the first from the 1600’s is credited with creating the first gingerbread man, which she presented to visiting dignitaries in the shape of their own likeness. Gingerbread tied with a ribbon was popular at fairs and became a sign of affection when shared.
The gingerbread pendulum had swung to the dark side within a few years after Queen Elizabeth’s death. Dutch magistrates ruled it unlawful to prepare or eat the molded cookies when they fell out of popularity.
Witches were said to make gingerbread figurines, eat them, and thereby kill their foes. Even after witchcraft persecution stopped in the 18th century, the terrible witch lived on in oral legends. For their story of a cannibalistic witch enticing youngsters into a gingerbread home, the Brothers Grimm drew on folklore. Hansel and Gretel pushed her into the oven where she meant to bake them to rescue themselves. A bleak narrative, to be sure.
