April 1, by Shellie Wilson. Leave a Comment

This sequin tutorial is all about showing you how to sew on a sequin. Whilst this sewing tutorial is aimed at belly dancers, it still features the basic techniques you need for using sequins in your embroidery patterns or crazy quilts. These techniques work for basic sewing projects too. Sequins are the sewers glitter, and we all know you can not have enough Glitter!

But wait, what are sequins?

Sequins are small, flat, shiny decorative elements that are typically made of plastic or metal. They are often used to embellish clothing, accessories, and decorative items such as pillows, curtains, and bags. Sequins come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, and can be sewn or glued onto fabric or other surfaces.

They are often used to add sparkle and glamor to costumes, dancewear, and evening wear, and are a popular choice for holiday and party decorations.

Where did they originate?

During the 17th to 19th centuries, sequins (often formed of reflecting metal pieces) sewed onto coats, bonnets, and gowns were fashionable among the aristocratic and rich. Following the discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb in the 1920s, sequins had a resurgence as a result of Egyptomania.

What can you use them for?

Sequins are awesome little decorative elements that can be used in all sorts of crafting and sewing projects. They come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and colors, and are perfect for adding a bit of sparkle and glamor to just about anything.

For example, you can sew or glue sequins onto clothing like jackets, jeans, or t-shirts to give them a bit of bling. You can also add sequins to hats, purses, and shoes to make them more festive.

If you’re feeling crafty, you can use sequins to make jewelry like earrings, bracelets, or necklaces. You can sew them onto fabric or string them onto wire or thread.

Sequins are also great for making holiday decorations like ornaments, garlands, and wreaths. You can even use them to create sparkly wall art or to personalize gifts.

Finally, you can sew on patches made out of sequins to your clothing or accessories. This way, you can spell out your name or make a unique design.

Sequins in sewing?

If you’re into sewing, you can use sequins to add some pizzazz to your projects. One idea is to add a bit of sparkle to a plain dress or skirt by sewing sequins along the hemline or waistband. Another option is to embellish a plain tote bag or backpack by sewing on a sequin design, like a star or heart.

You can also create a custom sequin patch by sewing sequins onto a piece of felt or fabric, and then stitching it onto a jacket or backpack. This is a great way to add a pop of color and shine to your everyday wear.

For something a bit more glamorous, consider sewing a sequin trim onto a fancy dress or jacket. This can create a stunning effect that’s perfect for a night out on the town.

Finally, if you’re feeling extra creative, you can use sequins to create a unique applique design on a piece of fabric. This can be a fun and challenging project that will allow you to show off your sewing skills while also adding some sparkle to your work.
