Leaf Rubbing Free Hand Embroidery Tutorial

November 17, 2020 by Claudia Porter Leave a Comment

Do you remember when you were a child and you would collect all of those beautiful fall leaves that covered the ground in the fall months?  I could never decide which one I liked best.  Once I did, I would display it proudly around the house.  After a few days it would mysteriously disappear.

Here’s a way to show off that favorite leaf permanently.  It’s a leaf rubbing embroidery technique from Crewel Ghoul.  I have to be honest here, I have never seen anything like it, and it’s a lovely idea.  I wish I had known about it when my daughter was younger and she would bring me her favorite leaf.

While you do need a couple of special supplies (such as transfer paper) to help with the leaf rubbing, it is a simple project to make.  You will also need standard embroidery supplies. The only stitch required is the simple back stitch.

The size you make depends on the size of your leaf.  Of course this is not just for fall leaves.  I’m sure there are some gorgeous tropical leaves to choose from if you live in a warmer climate.  You could even snip an interesting one from one of your house plants.  What fun!
